Biography

Lesléa Newman  has published 80 books for readers of all ages including the poetry collections Still Life With Buddy, Nobody’s Mother, Signs of Love, Hachiko Speaks (chapbook), October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard (novel-in-verse), LovelyI Carry My Mother (memoir-in-verse) and I Wish My Father (memoir-in-verse). Her literary awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, two National Jewish Book Awards, two American Library Association Stonewall Award Honors, an Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Body-of-Work Award, and the Massachusetts Book Award. Both I Carry My Mother and I Wish My Father were named “Must Read” titles by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. From 2008 – 2010, Newman served as the poet laureate of Northampton, MA.
