Biography

Anne Whitehouse is a writer. She is the author of five poetry collections—The Surveyor’s Hand, Blessings and Curses, The Refrain, Meteor Shower, and Outside from the Inside, and four chapbooks—Bear in Mind, One Sunday Morning, Surrealist Muse, and Escaping Lee Miller. She is the author of a novel, Fall Love, as well as short stories, essays, feature articles, and reviews. She was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where she graduated from Mountain Brook High School and belonged to Temple Emanu-el, a Reform congregation. For the past twenty-five years, she has been a member of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, a Reconstructionist congregation in New York City.

She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna cum laude from Harvard College. She received an M.F.A. from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. She lives in New York City and Columbia County, New York, with her husband, Stephen Whitehouse, RLA, AICP, a principal of Starr Whitehouse

Anne worked as a resident artist/teacher in the New York public schools with Teachers & Writers Collaborative and New York State Poets-in-the-Schools. She taught at City College of New YorkBorough of Manhattan Community CollegeMarymount Manhattan College, and College of New Rochelle. She had a distinguished twenty-five-year career working for not-for-profit agencies in New York City, including Sanctuary for Families, American Opera Projects, and Dorot.
