Bonnie Jill Emanuel
Biography
Bonnie Jill Emanuel’s poetry appears in American Poetry Review, Colorado Review, Mid-American Review and other publications. She earned an MFA from The City College of New York in 2020, where she received the Jerome Lowell DeJur Award in Creative Writing, and the Irwin and Alice Stark Poetry Prize. Emanuel is a long-time poetry previewer for Bellevue Literary Review. Glitter City, her first full-length book of poems, is forthcoming in 2024.
What is the relationship between Judaism and/or Jewish culture and your poetry?
Judaism is not a main theme in my poetry—it finds its way into many poems mostly tangentially. Raised in a “Conservadox” household, memories from childhood are infused with traditional Jewish culture. Grandparents from Poland, France, and Russia, were always nearby, their European-Jewish beliefs, lore, customs, foods, and the like, are a large part of my recollections.
