Sherry Rind
Biography
Sherry Mossafer Rind’s books are The Hawk in the Back Yard (Anhinga Award), A Fall Out the Door (King County Arts Award, Confluence Press), Between States of Matter (The Poetry Box Select, 2020), and The Store-House of Wonder and Astonishment (Pleasure Boat Studio, 2021), winner of an Eyelands International Award . Chapbooks are The Whooping Crane Dance and A Natural History of Grief. She has received grants and awards from the Seattle and King County Arts Commissions, Pacific Northwest Writers, National Endowment for the Arts, and Artist Trust. A Pacific Northwest native and granddaughter of immigrants, she writes most frequently about animal and plant behavior and other science topics.
What is the relationship between Judaism and/or Jewish culture and your poetry?
Aside from the poems that are overtly Jewish (“A Brief History of Jews in the USA”), my poems are informed by my upbringing in a Jewish household. It\’s as simple as my work being Jewish because that is as much a part of my identity as is being human. I believe that being grounded in Judaism is a deep and fundamental connection, a sensibility from which my writing springs.
