Biography
Laurie Kuntz’s books are: That Infinite Roar (Gyroscope Press), Talking Me Off The Roof (Kelsay Books), The Moon Over My Mother’s House (Finishing Line Press), Simple Gestures (Texas Review Press), Women at the Onsen (Blue Light Press), and Somewhere in the Telling (Mellen Press). Simple Gestures won Texas Review’s Chapbook Contest, and Women at the Onsen won Blue Light Press’s Chapbook Contest. She’s been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes and two Best of the Net Prizes. Her work has been published in Gyroscope Review, Roanoke Review, Third Wednesday, One Art, Sheila Na Gig, and other journals. Her poetic themes are a result of working with Southeast Asian refugees, living as an expatriate in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brazil, and raising a husband and son. Her two dogs, Sage and Merlin, named for wisdom and magic, have been frolicking in doggy heaven for a while now, but she lives day-to-day in hopes that she honors the true meaning of their names. Content and retired, she lives in an endless summer state of mind, and on a daily basis, places something in bloom in her favorite blue vase.
What is the relationship between Judaism and/or Jewish culture and your poetry?
My heritage is Jewish. Family immigrated from Poland/Russia. I have lost family in the Holocaust. I was brought up a strong cultural Jewish person. Much of my writing delves into my family’s immigration history and the Jewish culture.
