Biography
Charlotte Hart is a poet and visual artist. Though Charlotte Hart had her first solo show at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1977 (from which three pieces remain in the permanent collection) it wasn’t until 2008 that she published her full length poetry book, The Pegasus Ring. Since then, she’s joined art and poetry in an ekphrastic marriage, starting with her chapbook, Organic Spirits, of which Ralph Hamilton raved: “I continue to savor [this] wonderful manuscript… It’s a balm, a tonic, a spa for the spirits… a honey comb of words….mmmmmm.”
Her latest book, Desert Flow, was born out of a remote, five year correspondence with Mexican visual artist Adrián Caldera. Poet Albert Goldbarth wrote of the project, ‘If you’re interested in the intersection where literary art meets visual art, you might explore the simpatico passions that flower (and sometimes erupt) at the corner of Charlotte Hart Street and Calle Adrián Caldera.”
Charlotte Hart’s spoken word poetry, in collaboration with @Sphirical_Art’s kinetic NFTs, are available for sale on SuperRare. The NFT and accompanying poem, “Dazzled in Dystopia,” won the Web3 Gold Award for Spoken Word Poetry in 2024. She is also a recipient of the Poets and Patrons Society of Chicago First Place Award and the Journal of Modern Poetry Award.
Charlotte Hart’s work in progress of modern Biblical illuminations includes over eight hundred visual artworks and poems to date. Lewis Manilow, former President of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, described this work as \\\\\\\”…artistically and spiritually extraordinary. The quality is so high and the vision so strong that I find it an astounding achievement.\\\\\\\” The late Christian author and theologian Dr. Martin E. Marty, Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago observed: \\\\\\\”Anyone can do illustrations and anyone can have devotion, but to conceive of the wedding of these two as [Charlotte Hart] has in drawings and paintings…is quite a heroic venture.\\\\\\\”
Her poem, “Clark Street Beach” is incised in concrete in front of the public library in Evanston, Illinois.
What is the relationship between Judaism and/or Jewish culture and your poetry?
I can describe my relationship to Judaism in my poetry in one word: intimate.
