Biography
Miriam Flock is the author of As the Word Broke Open (Mayapple Press, 2026), a collection of poems on Jewish themes. Her poetry has appeared widely, including in Poetry, Salmagundi, and Chicago Review, and in specifically Jewish publications such as Berru, CCAR: The Reform Jewish Quarterly, and Lifecycles: Jewish Women on Biblical Themes in Contemporary Life. Her chapbook, “The Scientist’s Wife,” was published by Finishing Line Press in 2021. The winner of an Academy of American Poets Prize and the Anna Davidson Rosenberg Prize for poems on the Jewish experience, Flock earned her bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and two master’s degrees, one in journalism from Columbia and one in creative writing from Stanford. She is also the author of a novel about the Jewish Back-to-the-Land Movement, Wild Grapes.
What is the relationship between Judaism and/or Jewish culture and your poetry?
Jewish themes are central to many of Flock’s poems, including all of those in her collection, As the Word Broke Open. From the twilight of the sixth day of creation to the hellscape that was the Kovno Ghetto, her work navigates sacred text and lived experience. Her poems ask what it means to carry ancient stories in a mortal body—to bake challah knowing it is both bread and offering, to wrestle with God in the dark and recognize His image in a brother\’s face. Flock draws on Torah, Midrash, Aggadah, and a lifetime of faithful doubt to illuminate the binding and breaking that run through every life.
